State Rep. Mike Fasano is being honored for improving transparency in government at the First Amendment Foundation's annual Sunshine Week luncheon.
The award is given each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to furthering open government in the Sunshine State. A maverick Republican from New Port Richey, Fasano returned to the House last fall because of the state's term limits law following two terms in the Florida Senate. Fasano will receive the award Thursday for his efforts during the 2012 legislative session in fighting to keep the process open and accessible.
The award was created in 1995 to recognize contributions made by Pete Weitzel that ensure state officials adhere to Florida's strong open government laws. Weitzel is a former managing editor of The Miami Herald.
