ORLANDO, Fla. -

A manatee injured by a crab pot line gave birth Wednesday after being rescued and taken to SeaWorld Orlando.

SeaWorld representatives said its Animal Rescue Team went to Sykes Creek in Merritt Island on June 8 to rescue the manatee, which also had fishing line wrapped around her front flippers.

Team members took the 10-foot, 1,380-pound manatee to Sea World Orlando, where her front right flipper was amputated. Representatives said the manatee, which was pregnant, was treated with antibiotics and began to mend.

Between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday, the mother manatee gave birth to her calf.

The calf has been nursing and bonding with its mother, and both seem to be doing well, SeaWorld said.
