Restoration repairs on A1A in Fort Lauderdale start Monday

Officials: Properties in immediate area may experience vibration

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Construction crews will begin pre-drilling Monday for a project along the eastern edge of State Road A1A in Fort Lauderdale, the Florida Department of Transportation announced.

The project will fix the part of the roadway that was damaged by erosion after Hurricane Sandy turned close to Florida's coast.

The drilling will be performed on asphalt where sheet piling will eventually be installed between NE 14th Court and NE 18th Street, north of Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. In the meantime, a separate crew will continue removing sidewalk, concrete barrier wall and damaged asphalt within the construction zone.

FDOT anticipates that work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

A contractor will move a drill rig onto the project site Monday, and drilling is expected to begin by the end of the day. The contractor plans to begin working on the south end of the project and progress northward. Properties in the immediate area may feel vibration caused by the drilling. The vibration will be monitored to ensure that it is within the permitted limits, officials said.

The FDOT said it received a field permit for the work from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Officials said FDOT has received questions about the palm trees located on the south end of the project. These have been reviewed by City of Fort Lauderdale staff. As the project progresses, should any of the palms be affected by the construction, FDOT's contractor will relocate them to Snyder Park, where they will be cared for by the city.

FDOT and the City of Fort Lauderdale are asking beach users to help keep this section of A1A safe. Please do not walk, jog or bicycle in the area between the orange/white temporary barrier wall and the beach, which is the construction zone. Pedestrians and beach-goers should use the sidewalk on the west side of A1A and beach access points to the north and south of the construction zone. This may be less convenient, but safety is of the utmost importance, FDOT said.
