PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A 23-year-old wake boarder drowned after getting caught in a spillway off of a South Florida highway.
Authorities say Lance Duffett of Fort Lauderdale was wake boarding with friends on Thursday afternoon near Palm Beach Gardens.
The Palm Beach Post reports Duffett got caught by a rush of water and was trapped below the waterline at the bottom of a dam.
The accident happened about 4 p.m. A fire-rescue district chief was flagged down to get Duffett out.
The Post reports the water pressure was too great. Others also tried to help. It took dive teams more than 25 minutes to recover his body.
A 13-year-old boy drowned at the same location in June after losing his grip while climbing a fence and falling into the water.
