Sanford twins retire after a half century
Sanford twins retire after working in the clerk's office for more than a half century
The Wilkes sisters are retiring from their jobs at the Seminole County courthouse in Sanford after careers that spanned a half-century.
More than 400 people showed up for a retirement party for twins Joan and Jean Wilke.
Joan Wilke began her career as a deputy clerk after graduating from high school in 1956. Her sister was appointed to a similar job about a year later. Since then they've worked for five clerks of courts and have seen the department grow from eight employees to about 220.
The Orlando Sentinel reports the sisters never married and have lived in the same house near the courthouse their entire lives.
The Wilkes sisters say it's time for something different, like the trip to Europe they're planning for the spring.
