Sources: Gun Owned By Popular DJ Used In Sunrise Homicides
DJ Laz, Power 96 morning host and recording artist who helped popularize Cuban rap artist Pit Bull, owned the gun used in yesterday's Sunrise slayings, according to sources.
The suspect in the killings, Marcus Trotman, was an audio engineer for DJ Laz, whose actual name is Lazaro Mendez. Trotman had been staying at Mendez' Plantation home due to marital problems. Trotman had been charged by Sunrise police with domestic violence on August 22 after allegedly choking and beating his wife, Danielle Lorenzo, 30, so badly that police said she required 15 stitches in her head.
Violence erupted again yesterday when Lorenzo, pictured here with Trotman, told him at her Sunrise that she wanted a divorce. Trotman is then suspected to have shot Lorenzo and her mother, Linda Scudera, 56, inside the home before turning the gun on himself. All three died from their wounds. Spared was Lorenzo's five-year-old daughter, who witnessed the shootings and ran outside to a neighbor's home.
Mendez contacted police when he heard about the slayings in the media, sources report. It was then learned that one of his guns was missing -- the gun used in the killings. A spokesperson for Mendez told Local 10 only that he is grieving. There is no indication that any any wrongdoing is suspected on the part of Mendez.
Local 10 is on the story and will report updates.
