Here are just a few of the events happening around South Florida to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Parade
The Parade will take place on Monday, January 21st from at 11:00 AM to approximately 2:00 PM. It will travel along Northwest 54th Street, from 12th Avenue to 19th Avenue.
On Monday, January 21st, 2013, South Florida Urban Ministries (SFLUM) will celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a day of community service. SFLUM staff and its team of AmeriCorps members will spend the day beautifying Florida City and Lakeview through several painting, planting and performing arts projects.
Over 100 volunteers have already signed up en masse and will join the fun and spend the day giving back to the community. At Branches Florida City, the South Dade community will celebrate "Florida City, Love Yourself". Volunteers will help beautify and revitalize 4 homes in the Florida City community, helping those families in need on this special day. Volunteers will also be painting murals at the local Elementary School and at Florida City's Post Office. At the SFLUM main office in Lakeview, volunteers will honor Martin Luther King through increasing awareness for violence prevention in our communities with anti-gang presentations and motivational activities to educate our youth and families. There will be music as well as food served for those who bring a donation of canned food or to be donated to food local pantries.
The activities will take place at and around one of SFLUM's afterschool centers, Branches Florida City, which is located at 145 SW 5th Avenue, Florida City, FL. The day begins at 7:30am with Registration and an Opening Ceremony, followed by the Community Service projects. At 12:30pm, lunch will be served, accompanied by a Closing Ceremony. SFLUM's main office site is located at 11500 NW 12th Avenue, Miami, FL. The MLK Day activities will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm, with lunch being served at 12:00pm. Please bring a canned goods item to receive a complimentary meal ticket.
King Holiday Parade

The county’s largest King Holiday Parade features local high school bands, drumlines, floats, fraternities, sororities, thousands of school children and representatives from local civic, cultural and religious organizations. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, located at 591 N.W. 31 Avenue and culminate at Dillard High School, located at 2501 N.W. 11 Street.
King Holiday Non-Violence Rally & Battle of the Bands

Immediately following the parade, the MLK Non-Violence Rally and Battle of the Bands will begin on the Dillard High School Otis Gray Football Field, located at 2501 N.W. 11 Street. Participating bands will “play for peace” in a friendly competition to commemorate Dr. King’s non-violence legacy. This year’s theme is “Non-Violence is Contagious…Catch It!!!”

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be celebrated in Hallandale Beach with the annual Scholarship Gala, 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, and Dr. MLK Parade and Festival, 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 21. The Community Civic Association has partnered with the City of Hallandale Beach for the events during the three-day national holiday weekend.
The 10th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Scholarship Gala and Fashion Show at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE. 3rd Street, will open the holiday weekend. The parade on Monday, Jan. 21, will wind throughout the Northwest Quadrant and along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. The festival is scheduled to begin at noon at O.B. Johnson Park, 900 NW 8th Avenue.
Come be a part of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, Monday, January 21st, at Westside Park, 445 SW 2nd St, beginning with the parade at 10:00am. Bring out the family to watch the parade and then join in the celebration at Westside Park where you can enjoy live entertainment, the kid's zone and other activities throughout the day.
Parking and free shuttle service is available from Pioneer Park until 4:30pm.
