A South Florida man has been acquitted of manslaughter and burglary charges following his second trial after already being locked up for six years.
A Palm Beach County jury found 25-year-old Patrick Melehan not guilty Wednesday. He was previously convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 25 years in prison, but that conviction was overturned last year.
Melehan testified in his own defense during his second trial. He said he reached into 18-year-old Carlos Lopez's truck in 2007 and punched the man in self-defense to keep him from shooting him.
The Palm Beach Post reports that Lopez's car spun out of control, and he was found impaled on a rod. There was no testimony at either trial to explain where the rod came from or how Lopez received the injury.
