BIG PINE KEY, Fla. -

Hundreds of professional and amateur astronomers have headed to the Florida Keys this week for the 28th annual Winter Star Party.

Every night, telescopes are being laid out at a Girl Scout camp in Big Pine Key for the yearly event, which attracts several star gazers from Canada and other northern parts.

The Southern Cross Astronomical Society, which organizes the event, says many astronomers come to see the large number of southern constellations, comets, and stars visible from the clear night skies in the Florida Keys. The lack of city light contributes to the prime viewing conditions.

The event also features lectures and programs hosted by noted astronomers and guest speakers.
