NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – A stay has been granted for a high school valedictorian who was facing deportation.
The Department of Homeland Security said Daniela Pelaez, 18, has been given a two-year reprieve.
Last week, a judge ruled that Pelaez, the valedictorian at North Miami Senior High School, must return to her native Colombia.
Hundreds of her classmates protested that judge's ruling.
Pelaez is scheduled to meet with U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday.
