NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Investigators said a man has confessed to planning on robbing and raping a woman after DNA led officers to name him a suspect in an October abduction attempt.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said Theodore Shirley, 19, was arrested this week in the Oct. 1 incident.

BSO said Shirley was the man who approached a 29-year-old woman as she walked out of the Elegant Beauty Supply Store at 7250 W. McNab Road, pulled a gun on her and forced her into her car. He put a gun in her mouth to keep her silent, then wrapped duct tape around her head, nose, mouth, arms and wrists and forced her into the back seat, according to investigators.

A witness saw what happened and called 911. Shirley was driving the car when a deputy tried to pull him over, BSO said, but then he stopped, got out and ran.

BSO said the victim slammed on the brakes before her car could crash into a Taco Bell restaurant.

Investigators used DNA found in the car, where they said Shirley left a stolen gun, a beanie, gloves and duct tape, to identify him as a suspect.

Shirley faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking with a firearm, burglary with assault or battery, armed burglary of a conveyance, attempted rape and grand theft of a firearm.

BSO said Shirley told detectives that he had planned to rape and rob the victim.
