MIAMI -

Police arrested a man who detectives say led them on a 30 minute chase after he stole from a tool shop in Southwest Miami-Dade County and hit a police officer with a U-Haul truck.

Patrick Darrell Conyers faces several charges, including fleeing and eluding police, authorities said. Records show Conyers was driving with a suspended license.

As of Friday night, Conyers and an officer were hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Local 10's Janine Stanwood reported the officer likely has a broken leg. Authorities said Conyers was being treated for scrapes and bruises. After that, authorities said he will likely be transferred to Miami-Dade County Jail.

The chase started when a man stole from Northern Tool + Equipment Store at 18100 S. Dixie Highway in Perrine on Friday morning, according to Miami-Dade Police. Employees at the took shop recognized the man, who they say had stolen from them before, and told police to look out for a U-Haul truck.

About five blocks away, at SW 186th Street and the Busway, a police officer pulled over the truck. While he was talking with the driver, Conyers turned the truck toward the officer and drove away, hitting the officer's hand, said police.

Police said Conyers, 45, then led police on a chase on the Palmetto Expressway and eventually made his way into Coral Gables and Miami.

The chase came to an end in the 2400 block of Southwest First Street, near Miami Senior High School.

"Everyone started running -- running into the classrooms," said one student.

"We didn't know what was happening so it was really scary," said Penelope Nunez, another student.

Sky 10 showed officers dragging Conyers out of the vehicle and placing him in handcuffs. Police said Conyers didn't get out of the truck when asked.

"He did have to be physically removed from the vehicle by the officers," said Aida Fina-Milian with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The Miami-Dade Police officer's leg was injured, and could have broken, when he was pinned between the U-Haul and a police car as the truck moved forward. A City of Miami Police officer was also transported after suffering a cut to his hand.

Conyers was last arrested August 31st and charged with credit card theft and grand theft. He bonded out of jail four days later and is scheduled for trial on January 15th.

"He has convictions for firearm violations, carjacking, fleeing and eluding, and he currently had two open bench warrants for driving with a suspended license," said Fina-Milian.

A neighbor said Conyers was often seen driving the U-Haul and that police came by recently and asked about it.
