Suspect wanted in police-involved shooting commits suicide, officers say
Police: Brian Howell in custody; Dell DiGiovanni's body found; Michael DiGiovanni sought
One of the men accused of shooting at police officers before a fire broke out at a home in Kendall Tuesday night was found hanging from a tree Wednesday afternoon, the victim of an apparent suicide, police say.
The incident began around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at 15415 SW 57th Street.
According to police, when officers approached the house as part of an on-going narcotics investigation, three men opened fire and ran off. No officers were injured during the shooting.
"It sounded like a gate but it wasn't," said Stephanie Diaz. "It was shooting and it wouldn't stop."
A fire then started at the residence. It's unclear what sparked it.
"The flames were big," said Dariel Leon.
On Wednesday, a charred body was found inside the house. It has not yet been identified.
Police arrested 29-year-old Brian Howell early Wednesday.
The search for the other two suspects, Dell DiGiovanni's and Michael DiGiovanni, 27, continued. Police say they are father and son.
On Wednesday afternoon, neighbors called police after they found a body hanging from a tree in a wooded area near SW 147th Avenue and 47th Street. When officers arrived, they identified the victim as Dell DiGiovanni.
Michael DiGiovanni remains on the loose, police say.
A police perimeter is set up between Southwest 157th and Southwest 152nd Avenues between Miller Drive and 60th Street.
Michael DiGiovanni is considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information on shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
