OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) — A suspected burglar was shot and wounded by a South Florida homeowner.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that a 73-year-old man was in his Oakland Park home Wednesday evening when 45-year-old Kevin Madigan broke in through a window. A neighbor who heard glass breaking called 911.
As Madigan exited the house carrying a television, BSO reports that he spotted the neighbor, still speaking with 911, and tried to take her phone. The 73-year-old homeowner came out of his house and fired several shots at Madigan, who was wounded but able to drive off. Madigan crashed a few miles away and was taken to a Fort Lauderdale hospital.
BSO reports that Madigan faces multiple charges, including burglary, grand theft and strong-arm robbery.
Detectives say the homeowner was justified in shooting Madigan to defend himself and his neighbor.
