Teen Mom Killed Getting Milk For Her Baby
Market Owner Says Neighborhood Is 'War Zone'
Police said a 19-year-old woman who was fetching milk for her baby was shot and killed, along with another man, outside a market.
Miami-Dade police said Sharika Wilson was walking out of Imperial Market in the triangle area when an unidentified man shot her and Antwan Jones Saturday night. Wilson and Jones, 30, died at the scene.
Investigators said Wilson had gone to the market to get milk for her baby.
The owner of Imperial Market told Local 10's Kellie Butler that the neighborhood is "a war zone" with, in his opinion, little police presence. He said that since he took over the market in January, he calls police regularly about incidents in the triangle area, but that police don't show up.
But Opa-locka Chief of Police James Wright stated otherwise.
"I would have to disagree with that," Wright said, adding that the triangle area remains a top priority for his department.
It was around this time last year that Melanise Malone was shot in the head and killed after her mother decided they should escape two days of shooting in the neighborhood.
Wright said Saturday's shooting was the first double murder since Malone's death.
"We have increased patrols in this area since last year," Wright said.
