PowerBall changes start Sunday

MIAMI -

The cost of a Powerball ticket has gone up to $2 and that means the jackpots are also going up.

Starting jackpots will now be $40 million.  The second prize has also increased to $1 million for players who match 5-of-5 winning numbers.

In addition, the revised game shrinks the pool of numbers from 39 to 35, creating better overall odds of winning a prize from one in 35 to one in 31.8.

"These exciting changes were made with Powerball players in mind - bigger jackpots, more chances of millionaires and better odds of winning," said Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O'Connell.

Powerball tickets will now cost $2 per play.  Power Play add-on will remain at $1 per play, but players will now be able to win up to $2 million instead of $1 million.

The ticket price increases do not affect the Florida Lotto.

Wednesday's Powerball drawing has rolled over to $80 million.
