Famed tightrope walker Nik Wallenda successfully walked on a wire 200 feet over U.S. 41 in Sarasota without a safety harness on Tuesday morning.
The circus performer and six-time Guinness World Record holder performed the stunt Tuesday, while a microphone captured a conversation between him and those on the ground, including his father.
"There was more wind than I expected," Wallenda said. "That's the unforseen and that's where training and preparation comes in."
The Sarasota City Commission allowed him to do the stunt without a tether. Wallenda wore a tether for the first time last summer when he walked across Niagara Falls, because the television network that was paying for the performance insisted on it.
Wallenda began his Sarasota Skywalk at Bayfront Park. The wire ends at the Marina Tower Condominium. Part of U.S. 41 was shut during the walk.
