Newspaper editors picked Martin's death as the state's top story in a poll conducted by The Associated Press.

The shooting of the 17-year-old by an armed neighborhood watch volunteer in the central Florida city of Sanford raised questions about race, gun control and equal justice under the law.

A 44-day delay in the arrest of George Zimmerman led to nationwide protests, and everyone from President Barack Obama to celebrities weighed in on the shooting.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, saying he shot Martin in self-defense. His trial is set for the middle of next year.
