TriRail train strikes, kills bicyclist in Fort Lauderdale
Police need help identifying victim
A southbound Tri-Rail train struck and kill a man on a bicycle in Fort Lauderdale Thursday morning, according to Tri-Rail officials.
The accident happened at Cypress Creek Road.
Fort Lauderdale fire rescue took the man to North Broward General Medical Center as a trauma alert.
According to a preliminary investigation, a northbound train had just crossed through the intersection when a bicyclist started traveling westbound across the tracks on Northwest 62nd Street.
As the bicyclist was crossing over the tracks in the median section of the roadway, a southbound train came through the intersection and struck him.
Fort Lauderdale police say the traffic control arms for the railway were in the down position at the time of the incident, preventing vehicles from crossing the tracks.
Investigators have not been able to identify the bicyclist, but say he is a white male, possibly in his late 50s and approximately 6 feet in height.
The crash is still under active investigation.
Investigators are seeking anyone with information regarding the incident or the bicyclist’s identity to contact Investigator Donald Goedke at 954-828-5754.
