Turchin's Take: Missing teen
John Turchin's Blog
I knew it. This didn’t add up from the get-go. For a week, and again today, 17-year-old Naketa Leiba’s mother and father have insisted their daughter was kidnapped and was not a runaway. Well, guess what…..WRONG!
According to the Miramar police, she ran away and was staying with a friend just a few miles away.
I did a little digging.
Guess what - this "honor student" called her mother on a cell phone (which, by the way, detectives were tracing the signal) the day after she disappeared and told her – quote – "do not look for me."
That’s not all. This "honor student" also sent out a Twitter message while she was away saying "F—k college." And, according to investigators – mom and dad – the happy couple – NOT – are not married.
Their divorce was finalized one week before Naketa vanished.
Hmm ...
One other note – Police tell me this "honor student" was drunk as a skunk about a year ago when she slipped in through a bedroom window.
Naketa’s parents probably sounded the alarm because they felt they needed help finding their daughter and couldn’t do it on their own. But their lack of honesty, or their inability to remove their blinders, may have jeopardized legitimate missing kids cases.
When something like this happens, it makes the media and the community skeptical about going all-out and publicizing missing kids – especially teenagers.
Shame on those involved for not telling the truth.
If it were me my kid would be out in front of those cameras apologizing and thanking the community for caring.
Not judging … just sayin'.
