Victims identified in grocery store shooting
Police: Reginald Lee Taylor, Alfonso Hunter shot, killed in robbery
Police identified two customers at a South Florida grocery store who were shot and killed by two masked men with semi-automatic handguns Sunday.
Delray Beach police said two men with bandanas over their faces opened fire early Sunday inside Community Market. Reginald Lee Taylor and Alfonso Hunter were hit, police said.
"If he could help you, he would. Nobody deserved to go the way he did," said Rashonne Mackey, a friend of Hunter.
"Mr. Hunter was a hardworking man, very peaceful man. Why they took this man's life I don't know," said another friend of Hunter.
Taylor and Hunter were drinking coffee when they were shot. Police said one customer died at the scene and the other died at a hospital.
According to police, the men then demanded cash from the register and then fled the store. It wasn't immediately clear how much money they took.
Officer Jeffrey Messer said that the robbery is similar to one that took place two blocks away on Saturday. Police released surveillance video of that robbery, which showed two armed men enter the store and shoot at a man while two children stood at the counter. One of the men also shot at the door when someone approached it.
"The first thing he does is steal money from the children. Makes contact with the second victim in the hallway, fires one shot," said Delray Beach Police Sgt. Gene Sapino. "As you can see, their first instinct is not to identify a target, it's simply to shoot."
Police believe the men may be responsible for other robberies, including some in Broward County.
