'Smith' takes cab driver's GPS, iPhone, cash

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are looking for a man who robbed a cab driver in Fort Lauderdale.

According to police, the armed robbery happened at 1318 NW 7th Court about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 1.

Onondieu Demelus, a driver for the Yellow Cab Company, was dispatched to Plantation General Hospital to pick up a customer named "Smith," police said.

Demelus took the robber to the address, and when they arrived, the robber told Demelus he was armed and demanded Demelus' things, say police.

"When I pull over, he say, 'Hey, guy, give me all things you have. If you don't give me (everything), I'm going to shoot you,'" said Demelus.

Demelus then told the robber there were security cameras inside the cab, but the robber continued yelling his demands and reached towards his waistband, say police.

"I pull him, I get my seatbelt, I leave it," said Demelus. "I take my seatbelt out and I go out. I let him drop everything I got. When the guy say, 'He got a gun,' but you never know."

The robber took Demelus' GPS, iPhone, and an undisclosed amount of cash before running away, say police. He was last seen running west past the 1300 block of Northwest 7th Street.

When asked why he first fought back, Demelus said he didn't think about what could have happened.

"Job is dangerous because when you get a customer, you don't know which one you get," he said. "You don't know what kind of people you get. You scared about a gun. You scared about the people."

Demelus has been a cab driver for three years.

The robber is described as being in his 30s, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, and 200 pounds. He had a short haircut and was clean shaven.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Fort Lauderdale Police at 954-828-6093.
