Video shows events leading up to fatal beating
Police: Store owner beats man with crowbar
Surveillance cameras were rolling at a Perrine convenience store on the November evening when police said two clerks fatally beat a man there.
Akil Oliver, 34, died Nov. 18 after getting into an argument with the two clerks, brothers Ragheb and Nabil Sulaiman, at the Quick Shop Food Store at 9720 SW 168th St., according to police.
Police said the argument began because Oliver was 7 cents short for a pack of cigarettes. According to the arrest report, Oliver made a derogatory racial remark to the clerk, told him to go back to his country and made a profane comment about his mother and sisters.
Police said an off-duty Miami-Dade Department of Corrections officer and other customers tried to calm Oliver down, but he continued ranting. At one point, police said, he left the store, but then he returned and continued insulting the clerk.
According to the report, the officer was escorting Oliver from the store when employee Nabil Sulaiman, 19, hit Oliver with a bottle. Police said other employees joined in, and owner Ragheb Sulaiman, 24, got a crowbar and hit Oliver in the head. Oliver later was pronounced dead.
On Wednesday, authorities released the surveillance video showing the moments before the beating.
Ragheb Sulaiman remains in jail, charged with second-degree murder. Nabil Sulaiman was charged with aggravated battery. Both men pleaded not guilty Jan. 13.
Nabil Sulaiman was released from jail after posting $10,000 bond. He was supposed to appear in court Tuesday to surrender his passport, but instead, authorities learned he had left the country for the Middle East. Now, it might take an international effort to bring Nabil Sulaiman back to the U.S., and there are no guarantees he will ever return.
Protesters have been gathering outside the Quick Shop ever since Oliver's death in the hope of driving business away.
