Waste Management driver rescues worker from burning warehouse
Fire started by something in the trash
A Waste Management driver rescued a sleeping worker from a burning warehouse in Miami on Wednesday.
Osnel Hernandez was servicing an industrial warehouse at 13240 SW 131st St. early Wednesday morning when he saw thick smoke coming from a building.
Hernandez quickly called 911, then gained access to the building and rescued a worker who was sleeping inside.
Hernandez was trained in the company's Waste Watch program in November. Under the program, Waste Management drivers are trained on what to look for an how to respond in the case of an emergency.
"Our national Waste Watch program, which we launched in Miami-Dade County just three months ago, prepares our drivers to be an extra set of eyes and ears for local police, fire departments and emergency services in our communities," said Dawn McCormick, Community Affairs Manager for Waste Management. "Osnel Hernandez was trained in the program and did exactly the right thing in being aware of his surroundings and alerting emergency personnel to the smoke and fire. We are very proud of his actions and pleased that he was in the right place at the right time to prevent a tragedy."
Miami-Dade firefighters quickly responded and put out the fire.
A fire chief told Local 10's Constance Jones the fire was started by something thrown in the trash.
