DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -

A 67-year-old woman died after the Tiara East condo building caught fire in Deerfield Beach Saturday, fire officials said.

Firefighters said Ellen Kartman was home by herself when the fire broke out at the high-rise building near A1A and East Hillsboro Boulevard. Her husband, who also lives there, was not home.

"The smoke was just overtaking the whole side of the building we couldn't tell even which floor it was at point because it was such heavy smoke," said Pamela Griner, who works nearby as smoke billowed out the side of the building. "I saw people running on the top floor like trying to get out of the building."

A firefighter suffered burns to his face and was treated and released.

Several people in neighboring units were displaced and are being helped by the Red Cross.

Building managers said this time of year, only about half of the units are occupied.

The cause of the fire and where it started have not been released.
