MIAMI – A woman accused of being responsible for two crashes -- one of which killed a man -- faced a judge on Monday.
On Saturday, a 27-year-old man was killed in a crash near the intersection of SW 139th Avenue and Sunset Drive around midnight.
According to police and witnesses, Nicole Menendez, 25, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that crashed into the back of another car, sending that car and its driver, Omar Carrillon, into a tree.
Carrillon was an FIU grad and an accomplished entertainment producer who specialized in short films, voiceovers and impressions.
In court on Monday, investigators presented Menendez's failed field sobriety test. While her blood alcohol content was under the legal limit, there were other issues that they believe contributed to the deadly crash.
"Ms. Menedez advised that she is a recovering heroin addict -- that she was doing other drugs that night, including cocaine and did have a bottle of wine," an investigator said.
Menendez is facing two counts of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The judge set bond at $30,000.
