According to the Broward Sheriff's Department, it happened after a game between the West Park Saints and Miramar Patriots on Saturday.
Andrews Keigans, the referee, told police he called an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Saints after one of their assistant coaches made a derogatory comment from the sidelines. After throwing the flag, Keigans bumped into a player and then moved him off to the side to talk with the head referee.
"Parents were being parents, protecting their cubs, so," said West Park coach Anthony Ramos.
An assistant coach for the Saints, later identified as Robinson, ran onto the field and confronted the referee. The head referee then decided to call the game.
Police said Robinson, 43, and the rest of the Saints' coaching staff followed the referee who threw the flag off the field, and Robinson then hit the referee in the face. Robinson then ran away from the field.
Ramos told Local 10's Roger Lohse that the video doesn't tell the whole story. Ramos said the coaches only went after Keigans after he aggressively pushed his way through some of the players.
"Yeah, but do you think the referee should have been hit the face though?" asked Lohse.
"I don't think he should have been hit the face, but either way, you can't hit anybody else's kid," replied Ramos.
The punch was captured on video. The referee was not injured.
Robinson turned himself into to Broward Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon. His bond hearing was scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The team is part of the Miami Xtreme youth football league, whose president, Danny Martinez, released the following statement: "The League condemns the actions as they appear on the widely circulated video. We are taking appropriate investigatory and disciplinary actions."
Robinson is an ex-convict with numerous arrests dating back to 1987.
