MIAMI -

Yusimil Herrera left a Miami-Dade court room smiling on Wednesday after a judge agreed to alter her probation and allow the 28-year-old to live where kids are present.

Herrera told Local 10's Ben Kennedy that she is not a danger to kids. She spent eight years behind bars after she was convicted in the death of her own child, but struggled to find a place to live after her release in March.

"I feel like doors have been closed one after another. I felt like giving up a couple times," said Herrera.

Herrera spent 15 years in the foster system, where a Department of Children and Families lawsuit alleges she was beaten, raped, and drugged.

At 20, Herrera was arrested and charged with beating her own 3-year-old daughter and later accepted a plea deal for aggravated manslaughter. With the court ruling on Wednesday, Herrera said she is ready to turn her life around.

"Hopefully, this will allow me to get into programs and therapy," said Herrera.
