Affidavit: Davone Bess Baker-acted 10 months ago

BSO: Bess arrested Friday after spilling coffee on deputy, appeared to be on drugs

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An affidavit released by the Broward Sheriff's Office reveals why former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess, who was arrested Friday at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, was Baker-acted 10 months ago.

Authorities were called Saturday morning to the Coral Springs Marriott for medical reasons. The medical issue being addressed is unknown.

Deputies also responded on March 11, 2013, to a home on Northwest 87th Avenue in Cooper City for a medical call.

After arriving, deputies saw several large men attempting to restrain Bess in the master bedroom of his home.

Approaching the bedroom, the deputy could smell a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the room, according to BSO.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bess appeared extremely agitated and was physically throwing off the men who were attempting to restrain him.

Bess was incoherent and making irrational chants, deputies said. According to the affidavit, Bess was screaming "hide the guns," "where is my weed" and "I want to get in the end zone, throw me the football."

Fire rescue arrived at the scene and attempted to sedate Bess, but were unable to. Six deputies were needed to restrain Bess, as authorities said he was taken to Memorial East Hospital for evaluation.

Deputies spoke with Bess' mother, Chinell Carpenter, who said she flew in from California because she received a call that Bess wasn't acting himself for the last couple of days.

Carpenter told deputies that Bess had not slept in three days then and was going through "serious personal issues," according to the affidavit.

Carpenter said Bess had no prior psychiatric history and wasn't on any medication.

On Friday, Bess was arrested at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport after several passengers told deputies that he was "acting irrationally, dancing, (and) singing with his pants repeatedly falling down."

Bess bonded out of jail about four hours later, saying the incident may have been a misunderstanding.
