Anonymous donor adds to reward for hit-and-run driver who injured brothers

Reward increased to $5,500 after Kelv-Ron Florence, Apollo Smith Jr. injured last week

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – An anonymous donor has added $2,500 to the reward for information leading to the hit-and-run driver that left two boys for dead on the side of the road last week.

"Well, I just think it's dreadful, and I'm just surprised they haven't found this person yet," said resident Lucy Sbrocci.

Last Monday night, brothers Kelv-Ron Florence and Apollo Smith Jr. were critically injured by a hit-and-run driver as they walked on the shoulder of Bryan Road shortly after sundown.

One week later, the boys are clinging to life.

"My oldest son, Kelv-Ron, he's opening his eyes. He's moving a little bit," said the boys' father, Apollo Brown. "My son, AJ, he's still a work in process right now, but he's not dead. For the record, he's not dead."

The boys' parents joined Broward Sheriff's Office deputies Monday afternoon, passing out CrimeStoppers flyers at nearby businesses, hoping the new $5,500 prize will help net the person who was behind the wheel of the pickup truck.

"The apology will be accepted, but it's just, I need my boys, and it's wrong for what y'all did to them," said the boys' mother, Selena Brown. "It's very wrong."

Investigators said they believe the vehicle is a newer model, gray Toyota Tacoma. It should have front-end damage because pieces of the pickup truck were found at the scene.

Detectives are following up on several tips, but so far, the one they really need hasn't come in.

"A tag number, or someone that may have a neighbor who owns this type of vehicle that all of a sudden that vehicle has been missing," said Capt. Kevin Granville.

The boys' parents said they are holding on to hope that their sons will pull through and are pleading for the community to come through and turn in the hit-and-run driver.

"Nobody knows how I feel, so just please, anybody, could you please come out and help me?" Selena Brown said.

Anyone with information is asked to CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
