Bicyclist struck, killed by Tri-Rail train in Dania Beach

Passengers stuck on train for hours after crash

DANIA BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A bicyclist who was killed Monday after being struck by a Tri-Rail train in Dania Beach has been identified.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said Tuesday that Jerry Smith, 53, of Plantation, rode into the path of the train shortly after 4:30 p.m. near Stirling and Ravenswood roads.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tri-Rail passengers were stuck on the train for hours during the death investigation.

Deputies closed Stirling Road in the immediate area, as well as the exit ramps from Interstate 95.

Tensions mounted for passengers who were brought to the Fort Lauderdale airport station and supposed to take shuttle buses to their final destinations.

A fiery crash on I-95 in Boca Raton also affected Tri-Rail traffic.
