Biking accident in Weston leaves 1 dead

Miguel Aviles struck by tractor-trailer after cyclists collide

WESTON, Fla. – One man is dead after witnesses said a group of cyclists collided with each other, knocking one rider into the path of a passing tractor-trailer.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Miguel Aviles, 47, was knocked underneath a passing tractor-trailer along the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 near mile marker 31 in Weston about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Aviles and the group of about 300 cyclists were riding in one of the northbound lanes of the highway when the incident took place.

Aviles was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he later died.

Deputies said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not aware of the accident when it happened and was flagged down by another driver.

No citations were issued.
