Inside the forgery investigation

Cheerleaders who support coach watch as school board upholds firing.

This story involving the firing of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High cheerleading coach Melissa Prochilo won't go away, so I thought I'd share with you an investigative report at the heart of it.

It's a criminal investigation of forgery allegations -- conducted by the Broward School Board's Special Investigative Unit -- wherein Prochilo was accused of having cheerleaders sign their parents' names on permission slips to get into an outside gym for practice. It happened in September, but it didn't become an issue at the school until January, when a handful of parent began a revolt against the coach. Prochilo was cleared of wrongdoing by the SIU after an incredibly thorough investigation. It's also one of the oddest investigations I've ever seen and one that reveals the tenor of the entire case against the coach. This is your tax dollars at work. It's also fascinating reading.
