Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti showed up at the NAACP candidates' forum last night, but just barely.
Lamberti was an hour late to the forum at the Mizell Center on Sistrunk Boulevard that included his challenger Scott Israel. Members of the group said the sheriff showed a lack of respect; Lamberti said he had other obligations as sheriff. His opponent says Lamberti has made the entire campaign season a game of hide and seek, often showing up after his opponent has left the building.
The sheriff didn't show up at all for a televised face-off with Israel on Local 10 this Sunday. He told Local 10 reporter Ross Palombo last night why he doesn't like debates.
"When you're the incumbent you have to tell the truth," Lamberti said. "When you're the challenger you can sling whatever mud you want and hope it sticks."
