Boat crashes into wood piling off Miami coast; 1 person arrested

Woman taken to hospital; Boat operator arrested for BUI, says FWC

MIAMI – One person was arrested for boating under the influence and a woman was taken to the hospital after a boat with nine people on board crashed into a wood piling, authorities said.

The incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday off the coast of Miami near the Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Center at 1635 North Bayshore Drive.

The impact tossed some of the five women and four men -- between the ages of 18 and 24 -- around the 19-foot jet boat. No one was ejected from the boat.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who is investigating the crash, said the operator of the boat was arrested for boating under the influence.

The women on board the boat did not have life jackets on at the time. One of the women suffered injuries and was taken to JMH Ryder Trauma Center.

Miami Fire Rescue crews arrived at the scene and brought the passengers to Sea Isle Marina.
