Boater injured on yacht cruise in Biscayne Bay

Boater fell off bench at stern of yacht, officials say

MIAMI ā€“ A boater was injured while on a yacht cruise with family and friends in Biscayne Bay, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel said.

The boater, who was on the Sonia III, was injured in a fall off the bench at the stern of the yacht, officials said. The boater suffered a neck injury.

Officials said the yacht's captain called for help over the marine channel and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Fireboat 73 responded to the call.

The crew found one patient with injuries that needed further medical attention. Officials said the patient was taken to PortMiami, where MDFR Rescue 27 was waiting for transport to a hospital.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel said there has been an increase in calls dealing with incidents out in the water although boating season has not officially started.

"MDFR would like to remind boaters that taking safety precautions is essential to having a good time out on your boat," the department said. "Always wear your PFD (personal flotation device), know your navigation instruments and please slow down."
