Body found in Pompano Beach canal identified as Charlene Azzaro

Charlene Azzaro has been missing since August 2013.

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A body found inside a car in a Pompano Beach canal Wednesday has been identified as that of Charlene Azzaro, 56, who has been missing since August 2013.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter said divers were performing a training exercise in the canal near North Palm Aire Drive when they discovered the submerged Nissan Maxima. Divers discovered a body inside.

Carter said the car was registered to Azzaro, who had been living out of her car at the time of her disappearance.

Two women who arrived at the scene told Local 10 News that Azzaro was there sister and they immediately believed it was her who was inside the car.

A body found in a Pompano Beach canal is believed to be that of a woman missing since August 2013.

"She was a wonderful, happy girl," a tearful Kathleen Platt said of her twin sister.

Platt said she believed her sister had fallen on hard times.

"It breaks my heart," Platt said.
