Police encourage parents to take extra care to watch children near water

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A 2-year-old boy died Wednesday morning after he was discovered inside a pool during an Independence Day  celebration the night before, Pembroke Pines police said.

The child was attending an Independence Day party in Pines Village with his mother and siblings when he entered the pool area, police said.

The boy was under water for an unknown amount of time before he was discovered at about 7:12 p.m.

First responders arrived at the community within two minutes, police said, and the boy was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Pembroke Pines police is now encouraging parents to take extra care as it relates to children and water safety.

“If you have a pool, live near a lake, or are visiting a location with access to a large body of water make sure that your child is supervised at all times,” police said in a media release. “Communication is key; never assume that someone else is monitoring at risk individuals.”

Police also advise to always have someone watch a child in the water, and that fences, doors, gates and locks should be in use when possible.
