Broward County Commission seeks solutions following veteran's death

Broward County eliminates Tamarc bus stop near V.A. clinic

TAMARAC, Fla. – Broward County Commissioners discussed several options at Tuesday's meeting about how to prevent future injuries or death to veterans walking to the Veterans Administration Clinic on Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac.

The meeting came following the death of veteran Willi Span last Thursday.

The most immediate solution agreed to was the elimination of the bus stop Span use to get to the clinic. Span was hit by a car crossing busy Commercial Boulevard and died on scene.

Commissioner Martin Kiar said veterans will have to get off at the next stop at Nob Hill which is about two-tenths of a mile from the clinic but a much safer option.  There is a crosswalk at the intersection and a sidewalk to the clinic.

Kiar admits it will be difficult for disabled vets to go the extra distance but he has directed staff to explore using the county's para-transit buses to take veterans door to door for close to the same cost as a bus. Kiar says "finding long term solutions to this problem is incredibly important."

Broward County's Transportation Department spokesperson confirmed the bus stop has already been eliminated.
