Broward County commissioners to negotiate with Uber

Commissioners consider legal action against unregulated transportation service

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ Broward County commissioners hope to work with Uber before deciding whether to take legal action against the transportation service for operating unregulated.

Commissioners heard from proponents and opponents of Uber during Tuesday's meeting.

"You can't let, you know, people come in unregulated and do for-hire business," said one opponent. "It's just unacceptable and it's not fair."

The popular app-based ride service is quickly becoming the preferred means of transportation in major cities. That's because customers claim Uber drivers offer a better service for a cheaper price.

"The taxi system here doesn't work," said an Uber supporter. "It's overpriced, the cars are old, they're dirty and the experience has never been good."

Emily Shaw agreed.

"What are we all about if we can't have competition?" she said.

But registered taxi owners claim they simply can't compete with Uber.

"Uber is not creating new jobs," said one opponent. "They're simply taking jobs away from our professional drivers."

Commissioners decided to revisit the issue in 60 days. First, they'll try to negotiate with Uber.
