BSO reports 13 percent drop in violent crimes

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ The Broward Sheriff's Office says it saw significant decreases in crime agency-wide in 2013, while experiencing a slight rise in calls for service and population.

Deputies said there were a few more adults arrested in 2013, but juvenile arrests were down about 22 percent.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office said it saw a 13 percent drop in violent crimes.

"The dedication and extreme professionalism of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff's Office allowed us to have such a successful year," said Sheriff Scott Israel. "We will continue to fight crime smarter by targeting the most violent and habitual offenders."

Part 1 crimes include murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, aggravated stalking and larceny. According to BSO, Part 1 offenses decreased 8.1 percent and Part 1 violent offenses decreased 13 percent in 2013.

Calls for service increased by 1.5 percent as BSO said its population of service area increased by 0.7 percent for 2013.

Overall, deputies said arrests decreased slightly by 1.9 percent for 2013.
