FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

The Broward Sheriff's Office has identified the woman who was fatally struck by a BSO cruiser while she was crossing Federal Highway.

According to BSO, 46-year-old Helen B. Adams of Plantation was struck and killed early Wednesday morning at 3:09 a.m. in the 6300 block of North Federal Highway.

Authorities said Adams and her boyfriend, John Adams, were walking eastbound across Federal Highway to go to a 7-Eleven convenience store.

Corporal Jeffrey Bates, 31, was driving southbound when he collided with Helen Adams, deputies said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded, treated her on scene and transported her to Broward Health North hospital, where officials said she was pronounced dead around 3:30 a.m.

Bates, who was hired by BSO in March 2002, is assigned to the Pompano Beach district. Since then, deputies said Bates has had one preventable crash, which involved no injuries and only minor damage to the fender of his patrol vehicle.

BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit shut down the southbound lanes of North Federal Highway for about three hours while detectives conducted their investigation. Officials said there is no crosswalk in the area.

Deputies said the investigation is ongoing.
