According to investigators, deputies were called after someone saw Jermaine McBean, 33, walking along North Dixie Highway with a rifle. McBean then entered a nearby apartment complex.

A sergeant and deputy approached McBean and ordered him to drop the rifle, BSO said. As McBean began to turn, he pointed the gun at the deputies. That's when the deputy shot him.

No other shots were fired, and no other injuries were reported.

McBean was transported to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he died. Investigators said McBean was carrying a Winchester Model 1000 Air Rifle, which resembles a hunting rifle.

The deputy who shot McBean was placed on administrative assignment per department policy.
