MIAMI -

A cab driver was taken to the hospital Friday night after he was shot, police said.

The incident happened at 715 Opa-Locka Blvd. in northwest Miami-Dade County.

Police said the driver, identified by his family as Bertin Simon, was walking back to his car when shots were fired in the area. He was shot and bullets also hit his car.

Relatives told Local 10 News that Simon was caught in the line of fire after getting gas by stray bullets. They added he was shot in the neck and said his chain may have saved him.

Simon was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center and was in good spirits, police said.

Simon's family said he is a father of seven children and has been a cab driver for a couple of years.

Police were unsure if Simon was the target in the shooting. The search for suspects continues.
