Car crashes into front window of Miami Arts Charter School

Driver taken to JMH with severe arm injury

MIAMI ā€“ A car crashed into the front window of Miami Arts Charter School Thursday morning in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood.

Sky 10 was above the school at Northwest First Avenue and 23rd Street just before 10 a.m. and saw the car parked outside the school's lobby area.

The car did not go inside the building, but the front window was damaged.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with a severe arm injury.

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said students were already in class when the crash happened, and no one else was injured.

"We aren't exactly sure what direction he was traveling in. We understand there were a few witnesses here," Carroll said. "The biggest question is what caused him to have this accident. Luckily, there were no students that were in the hallway and no one was walking along the sidewalk at the time of the accident."

Carroll said the impact shattered glass across the school's lobby. A security officer was sitting in the lobby at the time, but he was not injured thanks to a support wall.

Carroll said two students witnessed the crash and were upset, but not injured. He said they were evaluated by paramedics and released to school employees.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
