Car crushed after truck hits I-395 overpass

Woman in passing vehicle survives

MIAMI – A piece of heavy equipment fell off a truck and crushed the driver's side of a passing car.

It happened on Biscayne Boulevard underneath the Interstate 395 overpass Wednesday evening.

The truck was carrying heavy machinery and could not clear the overpass, causing the equipment it was carrying to topple over. People in downtown Miami told Local 10's Christina Vazquez the resulting impact sounded like a bomb went off.

The woman in the car survived the accident by reacting quickly and moving her body into the passenger's seat, police said.

"She's going to play the lottery now," one officer said.

No clearance signs indicating the structure's height are posted on either side of the overpass.

The driver that caused crash was issued a ticket for careless driving. Police on scene said he had a spotter.

Northbound Biscayne Boulevard, between the American Airlines Arena and the Adrienne Arsht Center, reopened later on Wednesday. One westbound lane of the MacArthur Causeway, however, remains closed.

Authorities said there are no concerns that the impact compromised the structural integrity of the I-395 overpass.
