Car hits girl, woman; Girl killed

No charges filed against driver

MIAMI – Police identified the 6-year-old girl who was killed when she and her grandmother were hit by a car driven by a 16-year-old girl Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at Northeast 209th Terrance and 13th Place, near Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, and Madie Ives Community Elementary School, about 7:17 a.m.

Betasha Bien-Aime and Emilia Frenel were crossing Northeast 13th Place when they were hit by the car, police said. It's unclear what led up to the crash.

"I seen the grandma and the little girl on the ground," said Katiana Beaubran, who tried performing CPR on the girl.

Bien-Aime was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where she died.

"She loved pets. She loved going on the computer, she loved her homework," recalled her mother Marie Bien-Ami. "She was just awesome."

Frenel was also hospitalized in stable condition.

The driver hasn't been cited or charged. She was questioned by detectives and released into the custody of her parents. Police say she had a valid license.

The crash happened 13 minutes before the 15 mph school zone speed limit was enforced.

Neighbors complained teenage drivers speed through the area.

"I see the kids flying and I tell them you need to slow down," said Thomasena Hudson.

"They need more crossing guards once they know the kids are coming this way to school," added Selina Woods.

It's unclear if speed was a factor in the crash.
