Police: Alberto Ruiz stole woman's Lexus, struck 7 pedestrians

MIAMI – A man who struck seven people in the driveway of the JW Marriott Marquis after stealing a woman's car was taken into custody Wednesday evening, Miami police said.

Police said a woman arrived at the valet ramp of the downtown Miami hotel Wednesday morning, driving a brand new Lexus.

While the valet attendants were helping the woman and her friend with items in the trunk of the Lexus, a man, identified as Alberto Ruiz, 50, jumped in the car and rammed his way out of the busy hotel driveway, police said.

Police said during his escape Ruiz struck seven pedestrians, all of whom were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. One of the victims remains in serious condition, authorities said.

The stolen Lexus was later found abandoned and damaged in Little Havana.

Ruiz was arrested about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday and faces felony charges, including carjacking, police said.

Police said Ruiz has stolen cars in and around downtown.
