CBP, TSA holds Global Entry enrollment event

MIAMIU.S. Customs and Border Protection and Transportation Safety Administration agents held a Global Entry Program enrollment event at Miami International Airport Friday morning.

About 300 pre-approved travelers enrolled in the program during the event. It is a voluntary automated inspection system that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk international travelers. Global Entry members are also eligible to participate in TSA's Pre?™ passenger program, thereby further expediting their travel screening time.

"Approve applicants will avoid long lines and clear the federal processing in a few minutes," said Miami-Dade County Aviation Department Deputy Director Ken Pyatt.

"The sequestration is a reality, not just in Miami [International] Airport, for every single airport, every major international airport, there are passengers waiting hours," said Miami-Dade County Aviation Department Security Director Lauren Stover.

According to CBP, Global Entry reduces average wait times by more than 70 percent.

"When you get off a plane after traveling for 13 hours, you don't want to wait in a long line," said Beverly Rhodes, who signed up for the program Friday.

An applicant must complete and submit an online application through the Global Online Enrollment System and pay a non-refundable $100 application fee.

The program is available to U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents as well as Mexican nationals. Citizens of the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea may also apply under a special reciprocal arrangement that links Global Entry with the Dutch Privium program in Amsterdam and the Smart Entry System in Korea, respectively. Canadian citizens and residents may participate in Global Entry through membership in the NEXUS program.
