Hollywood police Officer Meredith Elrich said the couple, both 69, was awakened by three masked intruders who demanded money from them. Elrich said two of the intruders were armed.

According to the police reports, the intruders shattered the back sliding-glass door to get inside. The intruders then put pillows over the couple's heads, tied their hands behind their backs with belts and ransacked the house, stealing money, jewelry and electronics.

Once the intruders were gone, the residents freed themselves and called 911.

Among the items stolen was the resident's cellphone. Police followed the phone's GPS signal as it traveled north on Interstate 95 to Lauderdale Lakes, where the suspects were taken into custody.

Police said the suspects were in a car that contained multiple items stolen from the Hollywood home.

During an interview with detectives, Spencer said he wanted to "come clean" and admitted to committing the home invasion, the report said. "He also indicated that Gayle had come to him with the idea" and was the one who "created the plan and provided the firearms," the report said.

Elrich said the residents were specifically targeted by the suspects because two of them were previously employed by the victims.

All three suspects were being held without bond.
